Management, Leadership, and Innovation in the Public Sector

Purpose:

To understand the nature of management, leadership and innovation in the public sector, and how to enhance each.

Content:

  • Distinguishing management from administration, leadership and also entrepreneurship and innovation.
  • Recognising distinctive roles across these capabilities ranging from their application to strategy through finance to human resources and other areas.
  • Conduct of actual cases illustrating basic principles and practices.
  • Imposing the public purpose framework and public sector levers and context to judge and support enhancement.

Outcomes:

Upon completion of this program, participants will have a clear understanding of the nature of good management and leadership in the distinctive public sector environment and how to foster innovation in the public sector. 

Presenter:

The presenter for this course is ANU’s Professor Glenn Withers. He draws on his experience as an advisor to the Hawke and Keating government, and the Howard and Abbott government. He is now as President of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.

Cost and Conditions:

The complete program costs $900 with a 20% discount for five or more enrolments from a single organisation. No prerequisites are required. A certificate of participation will be provided upon completion. The program delivery is capped at twenty, to allow discussion and any individual attention needed for learning.

Location and Time:

The program requires attendance at two three-hour sessions on consecutive days. It can be provided on demand for enrolments of ten or more.  The presently scheduled program will operate 2.00-5:00pm with a short tea break at the BLI Training Facility.
